How much biogas does a biodigester produce?

Biogas production varies with the substrate and operating conditions. Learn four confidence levels, from a generic reference to actual field measurement.

Asking “how many cubic meters of biogas will I produce?” is essential when assessing thermal use, electricity generation, or an investment. The risk arises when an average per animal becomes a promise for every farm.

A reliable answer is built through levels of confidence.

Level 1: literature reference

Tables organized by species or substrate help establish an order of magnitude. They do not account for the diet, wash water, bedding, climate, or collection practices of a specific farm.

Use this level to decide whether further investigation is worthwhile, never as a production guarantee.

Level 2: solids-based estimate

A preliminary calculation may relate daily mass or flow, total solids, the volatile-solids fraction, and an expected yield. Every term needs a unit, a source, and a range.

Excess water is a useful example: it increases the volume being pumped but dilutes the solids fed per cubic meter. “More effluent” does not mean “more energy.”

Level 3: BMP test

Biochemical methane potential evaluates a representative sample under controlled conditions. It reduces uncertainty about the substrate, but it remains a laboratory potential—not guaranteed field production.

Sampling, preservation, and the test method affect the result. Whenever possible, real mixtures should be tested as mixtures.

Level 4: measurement of the operating biodigester

Gas flow, gas composition, temperature, feeding, and shutdowns show what the system actually delivers. The data series must cover production-cycle and seasonal variations, not only one favorable day.

Ten factors that change the calculation

  1. species, diet, weight, and production stage;
  2. mass actually collected;
  3. water, sand, and bedding material;
  4. total and volatile solids;
  5. substrate biodegradability;
  6. temperature, pH, and alkalinity;
  7. loading rate, retention time, and configuration;
  8. mixing, scum, and sedimentation;
  9. leaks, pressure, and measurement;
  10. methane content, H₂S, moisture, and gas treatment.

From biogas to useful energy

Biogas volume is not methane volume. Converting gas into heat or electricity requires gas composition, energy content, equipment efficiency, internal system consumption, losses, and actual availability hours.

Payback therefore also depends on CAPEX, OPEX, the value of displaced energy, and the destination of the digestate. A gas calculation without an operating scenario may overestimate the benefit.

What to collect before requesting an estimate

Record species and stocking by production stage, diet, collection method, daily flow, wash water, solids analyses, temperature, seasonality, and the intended use of the gas. These data complement the guide on rural biodigester planning.
